Manifesting ideas is about looking closely and seeing patterns in our surroundings. Prolonged observation can reveal new forms and surprising moments of clarity. It can become a conversation with our natural world.
In the spring of 2020, Crown began a new series of paintings inspired by the patterns revealed outside of her Aspen studio window. Observing how the shadow and light fell on the surrounding mountains, which she had viewed countless times before, brought forth new ways of seeing the world. Evolving from her Aspen Maps series, Crown took the core shapes of this mountain view and abstracted, layered, and rotated the elements to reveal new forms and patterns.
As we orient ourselves to space, our perceptions are easily distorted by point of view, time, and memory. Transferring this artwork to a wearable garment furthers this distortion. What at first glance appears to be an abstract fabric reveals moments of recognizable landscape views. Our visual senses are designed to look outward. Through looking we might locate our bearings in the complex consciousness between the intimate and sublime.
